Selecting seasonal character makes it hardcore?

came back to game, figure whatever season I was in many months ago has ended, so would like to make another seasonal character. When I select the seasonal character button it just acts like I am creating a hardcore character with permadeath. I do not see any hardcore button. Can someone explain? My guess is, there isn't a current season and the interface hasn't been updated to reflect it?
